School official speaks out about the arrest of DeJean Myrtil, an employee at South Tech Academy

Accused of having sexual relations with a student

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. -- A 27-year-old employee at South Tech Academy charter school in Boynton Beach was arrested Thursday by Lantana police after being accused of having sex with a 15-year-old student.

Now, Jim Kidd, the president of South Tech Academy charter school, is speaking out about the sex crime charges leveled at DeJean Myrtil, a dean's assistant at the school.

"As soon as he came in and signed in we took him to the back," said Kidd.

Police say Myrtil had sexual relations, off-campus, with a 15-year-old girl attending the school. He's charged with lewd and lascivious battery -- a second degree felony.

Kidd alerted police after a teacher overheard students alleging that Myrtil was having sexual relations with the teenage girl.

"I don't think I can put it in words -- being a parent, a grandparent -- it's beyond what I can even describe," said Kidd.

Kidd says Myrtil had been at the academy less than one year and recently started a girls and boys basketball team.

"It's terrible for them but we are going to continue the basketball program, but he was the main person over it," said Kidd.

During a staff meeting, Kidd told employees what happened and that he is working to assure parents this is an isolated case.

"We are a safe school and we try to do the right things and will continue to do the right things," said Kidd.

Myrtil has been placed on unpaid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
