James Wertz: Boynton Beach man faces animal cruelty charge for punching, choking rabbit, police say

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. - Boynton Beach Police officers arrested a man on animal cruelty charges after they say he punched and choked his girlfriend's pet rabbit during an argument on June 27th.

According to the arrest report, James Wertz had gotten into a "disagreement over women's rights" with his girlfriend.

Police state that Wertz's girlfriend wanted to end the argument so she went into her bedroom to get away from him.

A short time later, the girlfriend heard high-pitch screaming coming from the living room and went out of the bedroom to find Wertz squeezing and punching her pet rabbit, according to police.

The woman told police Wertz was striking the animal so hard that blood was coming from the rabbit's facial area.

Police say when Wertz's girlfriend began calling 911, he became enraged and threw her across the living room.

Wertz then left the couple's home and the girlfriend was able to call 911. Officers searched the area and eventually located and arrested Wertz. He faces one count of animal cruelty and one count of domestic battery.

Police say the animal has serious injuries but is expected to survive.
