Daniel Kovatch faces charges, Boynton Beach police say, after a woman is out money, a kitchen

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. - An 89-year-old Boynton Beach woman has no money and no kitchen after police say a suspected phony contractor ripped her off.

According to police, Daniel Kovatch took $11,000 from Grace Modugno to remodel her kitchen in February, but disappeared.

"He said, 'I will be back tomorrow morning first thing and we are going to start doing work.' But he never showed up," Modugno said.

Modugno says Kovatch showed up to her home with his wife and his kids in the car.

Michael Galvin with the Better Business Bureau says that is a red flag. "When wife and children are there, it sparks emotion," Galvin said.

Boynton Beach police say they have filed charges against Kovatch with the Palm Beach County State Attorney’s Office for exploitation of the elderly, scheme to defraud, grand theft and contracting without a license.

Since the story aired Thursday, contractors from Boynton Beach to Port St. Lucie have offered to install a new kitchen for Modugno.

“It is so rewarding. It shows that there are good people out there who are willing to step out and help someone in need. It makes you feel really good,” said Stephanie Slater with Boynton Beach police.

Investigators said they will charge the suspect with exploiting the elderly, among other things.

If you have any information about him, call Palm Beach County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-458-TIPS.
