Boynton Police warn of new twist on ATM identity fraud

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. - Boynton Beach Police are warning bank customers to watch out for a new scheme that identity thieves are using to skim ATM card information.

Technicians who repair machines throughout Palm Beach County reported that thieves have been cutting the bottom of the ATM card readers to remove the microchip, police said.

They then insert their own battery-operated card reader to skim customers' account information.

If an ATM doesn't dispense money, that's a sign that it may have been tampered with, police said.

Police urge customers to check an ATM before withdrawing money. If it looks damaged or pieces are loose, do not use it, Boynton Beach police spokesman Stephanie Slater said.

She suggests contacting the bank or calling police.
