Accused dog thief arrested in Boynton Beach

Pet located, returned to owner

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. - An accused dog thief is now in police custody.

Police arrested Shamari Patrick at a motel Sunday night in Boynton Beach.

She told Boynton Beach police she sold the dog, Fluffy, to a Wellington woman three weeks ago.

The dog was located Monday morning and returned to its owner.

WPTV reported last week that a woman posed as a pet sitter on Craigslist and disappeared with a Boynton Beach family's 4-year-old Shih-Teese dog.

Police said the family had posted an ad on Craigslist in early July stating they were traveling out of the country and needed someone to watch Fluffy.

The family met with the woman two other times to discuss the assignment before leaving the dog in her care.

When the family returned from their trip on Aug. 4, police said the pet sitter stopped answering their phone calls and emails.

After a court appearance Monday, a judge released Patrick on her own recognizance and ordered her not to have contact with the dog's owner.
