Dominic Bernardine: Suspect identified after Boca Raton neighborhood lockdown, SWAT standoff

Man barricaded in house for 5 hours

A 40-year-old man involved in a standoff with Boca Raton police appeared in court Tuesday morning.

Police say the standoff began after they were called to investigate a domestic incident at his residence on Northwest 13th Drive Monday.

Investigators say they learned  Dominic Bernardine and a family member had a dispute over a car and he later barricaded himself inside the home.

Police say he had his 13-year-old son inside and when he was asked to come outside and to let his son go he refused. They say he also made threats that he had firearms.

"I drove out of the neighborhood, and I was surrounded by all these cops, literally," said Anthony Taliento. "This is one of the events that you wish that someone could have prevented."

For hours, the neighborhood was on lockdown with residents snapping pictures from the confines of their homes.

"They tell me to stay inside, I'm going to stay inside," said resident Laurie Colbert. "You just never know what's going on in people's lives. It can just happen anywhere," she said.

Police say Bernardine was finally taken into custody around 6:30 p.m. Monday.

He faces two counts of child abuse. A judge set his bond at $10,000 and ordered him not to have any contact with his two children.
