BOCA RATON, Fla. - A New York man was arrested in the parking lot of the Town Center Mall and charged with fraudulently purchasing iPhones using stolen Social Security numbers.
The Boca Raton Police said that around 5:15 p.m. Tuesday night, officers noticed three people walking towards a vehicle in the Macy's parking lot. The driver of the car appeared to be preparing a marijuana cigarette.
Police stopped the car as it was leaving the mall parking lot.
Investigators say they found a small amount of pot in the car.
Police also searched two Apple bags that contained newly purchased iPhones.
Justin Mercado told police that he was on vacation from New York and had purchased 8 iPhones in the Town Center Mall.
Tiffany Minsal, according to police, had just bought 5 iPhones.
Mercado, according to his arrest report, admitted to police that he had purchased a total of around 140 iPhones in New York, New Jersey, Boston and Florida. Mercado says they used different Social Security numbers to buy the phones.
Police say that Minsal was paid between $25 and $50 to buy iPhones for Mercado.
Justin Mercado and Tiffany Minsal were arrested and charged with fraudulently buying iPhones. They also face drug charges.
Two other people who were with them face drug possession charges.
