The Gift of Life Bone Marrow Foundation held a 5K fundraiser Sunday morning at FAU in Boca Raton to benefit transplant recipients.
Race organizer Marti Freund says there is only a 30 percent chance that a family member will be a bone marrow match. She says most times, it takes a stranger to save someone's life.
Very often the national foundation holds events at college campuses because nearly 65 percent of all donors called as a match are between the ages of 18 and 29 years old.
All the money raised will help add new donors to the bone marrow registry. The Gift of Life has already facilitated more an 2,600 transplants.
