FWC, PBSO, Boynton & Boca police among boat patrols for Memorial Day weekend

Avoid citations and fines, follow boating rules

BOCA RATON, Fla. - Florida Fish and Wildlife investigator David Fowler doesn't need a reason to stop your boat. He can pull you over just to make sure you have what you need on board.

"We're looking for life jackets, fire extinguishers, fishing licenses," said Officer Fowler.

In several checks on Friday most boaters passed the test, but not everyone is doing it right on the eve of Memorial Day weekend.

Fowler decided not to issue the $59 ticket for forgetting to put out a dive flag in the Intracoastal. He says that is not the most common mistake.

"Most common would be too many people on a boat and not enough life jackets," said Ofc. Fowler.

FWC won't be the only law enforcement on the water. PBSO, Boynton Beach PD and Boca Raton police will have extra patrols out as well.

Although drinking while boating isn't against the law, Fowler says drinking on board is a slippery slope.

"There's no magic number, if you are impaired and can't operate your boat we can arrest you for that," said Fowler.
