Florida Atlantic University will honor founding coach Howard Schnellenberger this year by naming the field at FAU's football stadium after the coaching legend.
FAU plans to honor Schnellenberger with the naming in a ceremony during the home opener against Tulsa on September 13, OwlAccess first reported and the university later confirmed.
FAU hired Schnellenberger in 1998 to study the feasibility of starting a football program.
The team first took the field in 2001 and Schnellenberger retired from FAU 10 years later.
“I am humbled beyond belief that the University would bestow this great honor on the Schnellenberger family, and me personally,” said Schnellenberger in a news release. “This is probably the highlight of my coaching career. Thanks to the FAU Board of Trustees, the University, the fans, the players and the coaches that were an integral part of this.”
The naming rights for FAU's football stadium were the center of a controversy last year when FAU partnered with the GEO Group.
Protesters objected to the for-profit prison company's association with the school because of their history with abuse investigations.
