Edna Zent: Boca Raton woman, 86, assaults elderly husband, police say

It began with a canceled flight – but it ended with an 86-year-old Boca Raton woman behind bars for assaulting an elderly person: her 89-year-old husband.

On Wednesday, Edna Zent wasn't feeling well. She was set to hop a plane to New York with her husband on Thursday, but her recently-operated-on knee has been bothering her.

She told her husband – whose name has been redacted from a Boca Raton police report – she'd rather not go to New York.

The husband didn't want to cancel the flight, the report says, but he called the airline anyway.

He told the airline clerk his wife was ill – he needed to cancel the flight.

The airline canceled the flight, and the husband hung up the phone. But Edna Zent became filled with rage.

"Edna became upset, because he called her 'ill,'" an officer wrote in the report.

The couple argued in the bedroom, where Zent threw things at her husband and swung her arms at him, striking his body.

The husband tried to defend himself by pushing Zent away. He fell into a rocking chair, knocking it over.

The husband retreated to the computer room.

Minutes later, Zent stormed into the computer room and continued to argue with her husband.

"She knocked over the computer chair and pulled the landline phone from the wall," the report says.

Zent then swung the telephone cord at her husband and hit him.

The husband retreated to the den to watch television.

"And," the report says, "to get away from Edna."

But she followed him and took his US Navy baseball cap off his head. She then struck him in the arm with the stiff rim of the hat and broke skin.

"He then decided to take the trash out," the report says, "so he could again get away from Edna."

But as he walked out of the house, Zent threw a gray pair of sneakers at him.

When the officers arrived, they found the knocked-over rocker in the bedroom, the knocked-over chair in the computer room, the thrown gray sneakers and the cut on the husband's arm.

Zent remained in the Palm Beach County Jail Thursday on charges that she assaulted an elderly person.
