Dr. James Cocores: Boca Raton psychiatrist arrested, accused of trafficking prescription meds

A Boca Raton psychiatrist was arrested this week after investigators say he illegally prescribed large amounts of Oxycodone and other prescription medications at his practice.

After a lengthy undercover investigation, agents with the Boca Raton Police Department say they determined Dr. James Cocores, 59,  wrote prescriptions for controlled substances for which there was no medical necessity.

Following a tip to Crime Stoppers, an undercover officer visited Dr. Cocores, who specializes in drug abuse treatment and opiate addiction, nine times during the investigation.

The officer, who acted as a patient, was seeking grief counseling and said she was seeing a chiropractor and another doctor for pain management.

A police report alleges Dr. Cocores prescribed multiple medications to the "patient", including Xanax, Vicodin, Percocet and Oxycodone without performing any physical exams or diagnostic tests.

According to an affidavit, the doctor also never queried Florida's Prescription Drug Monitoring Program to determine if any of his patients were obtaining controlled substances from other doctors.

Dr. James Cocores faces charges of trafficking oxycodone and writing a prescription without a medical need.
