Apartment units 'hollowed out' in suburban Boca Raton three-story building fire this morning

SUBURBAN BOCA RATON, Fla. -- More than 15 people were evacuated from a suburban Boca Raton apartment building this morning after a fire broke out.

Palm Beach County Fire Rescue crews were called when the fire broke out around 2 a.m. at Somerset Place, a three-story apartment building at 5614 Wellesley Park Drive.

Investigators saw flames and smoke when they arrived at the scene. The fire started on the second-floor balcony, but traveled as embers moved to the first and third floors.

Witnesses said they heard popping and a roar around 2 a.m., looked out the window and saw flames.

At least two units of the building are hollowed out, according to fire rescue officials.

At 6 a.m., fire crews were still putting out hot spots and smoke was still billowing from the roof.

No one was injured in this fire. The cause is still under investigation.
