BOCA RATON, Fla. -
Kari Zimmerman was driving to work Sunday morning down Glades Road in Boca Raton, before driving herself into trouble.
Zimmerman said just after 7:30 a.m., she saw several police cars pulling people over. Not knowing what was going on, she said she pulled around the vehicles.
That's when she drove over a down power line, a live wire.
Almost instantly, Zimmerman said she noticed smoke, and flames out of her rear and side mirrors, coming from beneath her car.
She said she panicked, and jumped out of the car without closing the door. But that, she says, is what saved her life.
"I was in such a panic, that I didn't close the door. Luckily I didn't close the door because closing the door would have given me contact with the ground and the door at the
same time, and would have killed me."
Authorities with Florida Power and Light say the wire likely had a worn or weak section that caused it to fall. That is still under investigation.
Officials say if you ever drive over a live wire, stay inside until rescue crews arrive to assist you. If you're in Zimmerman's situation where the car catches fire, jump from the vehicle, and don't touch anything. Shuffle your feet on the ground as you walk away.
Zimmerman says she is getting a rental car in the meantime, and is thankful to be celebrating her birthday Monday.
