Flap over burglaries report in Boca Raton

BOCA RATON, Fla. -- A report of a drastic increase in crime in Boca Raton is being challenged by the Boca Raton Police Department.

Over the last year, the Boca Raton Citizens Crime Watch says property burglaries increased 123 percent in the city.
This was conveyed to more than 1,200 Boca Raton residents in the Citizens Crime Watch newsletter sent this weekend.
The police department is challenging the statistics saying they are specific to just a few months.
According to police, the 123 percent increase is a year over year comparison of just March, April and one week in May.
According to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, there have been more than 200 burglaries in Boca Raton so far this year.
A police spokesperson said the department is cracking down on loitering and prowling.
Boca Raton's mayor said her daughter's purse was recently stolen from a locked car.
