Brittni Muldrew, Joseph Muldrew: Boca Raton couple charged with child neglect

The neighbors knew something was wrong, deputies say, when they saw the 3-year-old boy trotting down the road, alone, in diapers.

The boy's parents, Brittni Muldrew , 28, and Joseph Muldrew, 33, fell into a deep sleep — fueled by vodka and Budweiser — and passed out on the living room couch just before the boy escaped their home, acording to a Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office report. The couple now stands charged with child neglect.

Deputies drove into the 11000 block of Leeward Place, west of Boca Raton, around 10 p.m. Wednesday. There, they met with a few neighbors hanging out a block away from the Muldrew house.

The night began normal enough, the neighbors said, until they saw a young boy running along the street, his parents nowhere to be found.

"He was heading toward a main road," a deputy wrote in the report.

The unidentified neighbors rushed to the boy and grabbed him. They eventually found the boy's home, where his mother and father soundly slept on the couch. The neighbors left the boy with his slumbering parents and called police.

"I knocked and banged on the front door several times but nobody answered," a deputy wrote in the report. "I could hear somebody running, crying and trying to open the door inside."

Inside, deputies found a girl, 10, another girl, 7, and the toddler. The toddler and 7-year-old girl were crying loudly, saying they were scared, according to the report.

"Please don't take them away," the 7-year-old girl cried.

Even with the noise of the crying children, the couple did not wake up, according to the report.

In handcuffs, Joseph Muldrew told deputies he was tired and fell asleep with the boy playing in the living room and the girls watching TV in their room. He denied drinking.

Brittni Muldrew, his wife, told deputies a different story: Her husband drank Budweiser and she took a shot of vodka. The couple landed in jail a short time later and bailed themselves out the next day.

Neither Brittni Muldrew nor Joseph Muldrew could be reached for comment despite repeated calls.
