CAMP LEJEUNE, North Carolina - A Boca Raton woman has become the first female Marine Expeditionary Unit Sergeant Major in Marine Corps history.
Sgt. Maj. Lanette Wright took over the position for the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit on March 14, 2014 from Sgt. Maj. Octaviano Gallegos Jr.
The unit is based at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina.
Marine Expeditionary Units are forces that deploy around the world aboard U.S. Naval ships. The MEU is comprised of 2,300 Marines and Sailors.
Female Marines first deployed on MEUs in the mid-1990s after berthing spaces were converted aboard amphibious assault ships to include female service members.
Sgt. Maj. Wright’s personal decorations include two Meritorious Service Medals, three Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals and two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals.
