Okeechobee toddler drowns in retention pond near home

OKEECHOBEE, Fla. - A 3-year-old boy drown Tuesday afternoon after being found in a retention pond near his home at NW 46th Avenue Villas in northwest Okeechobee, said Michele Bell, spokeswoman for the Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office.

Bell said that the child’s mother told deputies that she was preparing a bath for the child and told him to go to the bathroom and get ready for his bath. When the mother returned to the bathroom a few minutes later, the child was gone. She and other family members began looking for him and found him in a retention pond about 212 feet from the home.

A deputy performed CPR on the child until rescue units arrived on scene and transported the child to HCA Raulerson Hospital, where the child later died.

The cause of death will be determined by the Medical Examiner’s Office, Bell said.

There are no other details immediately available.
