Devin Maxwell: Okeechobee city councilman charged with DUI, according to a police report

An Okeechobee city councilman up for reelection has been a charged with DUI, reckless driving, causing damage with alcohol and leaving the scene of an accident, according to a newly released police report.

The charges stem from a crash July 4th on SW 21st Street in Okeechobee.

According to the report, a Mercedes Benz belonging to Devin Maxwell was involved in a crash shortly after 2 a.m.

The police report states that the car left the road and hit shrubs and part of a utility pole.

Witnesses told police that they saw Maxwell leave a bar and get behind the wheel of his Mercedes shortly before the crash.

An officer was unable to question the driver who could not be found at the scene.

Maxwell referred all questions to his attorney, according to the report.

The State Attorney's office took over the case last week.

Maxwell was charged in connection with the investigation Tuesday morning.

Attempts to reach him for comment today were unsuccessful.

A judge set Maxwell's bail at $3,000. He has since bonded out.
