LAKE PARK, Fla. - A man wielding a crowbar was shot by a Palm Beach County deputy overnight in Lake Park.
At 3:10 a.m., deputies patrolling in the 1100 block of Old Dixie Highway encountered a man attempting to break into a vehicle.
As a deputy approached the person, he found him to be wearing some type of black item concealing his face, gloves, black shirt, black pants and carrying a crowbar.
A PBSO deputy said he ordered the suspect, identified as Perciel Hamilton, 22, to stop and to "let me see your hands" and to "get on the ground".
The suspect turned toward the deputy and raised the crowbar, said a PBSO news release.
The deputy said he was in fear for his life discharged his firearm, striking Hamilton in the left arm. The suspect was quickly placed under arrest and found to be carrying a screwdriver and hammer.
Palm Beach County Fire Rescue arrived and transported the suspect to St. Mary’s Medical Center where he was treated and released into the custody of sheriff’s detectives.
Hamilton will be booked into the Palm Beach County Jail and charged with possession of burglary tools and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.
Hamilton has a history of burglary, grand theft and possession of cocaine.
The deputy has been placed on administrative leave which is standard department protocol.
