The bus driver, Elton Shakes, said he was heading to pick up his first group of students when the vehicle's engine light came on, and he smelled smoke.  The driver pulled to the side of I-95, and the engine quickly became engulfed in flames.

"I heard a bang, and the light went off.  When I came out of the bus, it was already on fire," said Shakes. “I was scared. I didn't want it to explode, so I quickly moved away."

Crews arrived quickly to the scene and extinguished the fire.

The school district said the bus was inspected last month.
