PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. - Dozens gathered Sunday to remember and celebrate the life of 2-year-old Elliana Jamason, who police say was killed by her mother's former domestic partner.
The service was organized with many special touches in honor of Elliana.
Guests dressed in bright colors, considered Elliana's favorite and sang her favorite songs.
Church leaders said all of this was done in Elliana's favorite place: The Metropolitan Community Church of the Palm Beaches.
"In fact, I saw her last Sunday morning in our nursery. She was just fully alive and had such a brilliant smile and joy," said church Vice Moderator, Brian Ladd.
Elliana's mother spoke about her daughter, describing the pain of losing her.
"I thought I was leaving her in the care of someone that was safe," the mother explained.
She described that she was kayaking on Memorial Day with a group of people.
"I got a frantic phone call that Elliana had passed away. Those women that were there surrounded me with love," the mother explained.
She said they paddled back quickly. She learned police arrested her former domestic partner, Kimberly Lucas, in connection with the child's death and trying to harm her 10-year-old son.
"Her loss is tragic, but what she gave to us will be something that carries us and encourages us for years to come," Ladd said.
"I believe that my Elliana was a special gift, an angel. I saw it in her eyes every day," the mother said.
Elliana's step brother has launched The Elliana Jamason Memorial Fund on the website gofundme .
The fund will got to her mother to help cover expenses needed for the family at the time, with the remainder going to a charity for victims of violence.
The fund has collected more than $10,000 so far, with the goal being $20,000.
