Palm Beach Gardens police say a young man died in an accidental shooting after a group of young people were handling a firearm this weekend.
A 17-year-old male suspect is under arrest and charged with manslaughter by culpable negligence after the shooting on Saturday.
The shooting occurred on Pinella Circle in Palm Beach Gardens.
The victim was 18-year-old Feliciano Sabates of suburban Palm Beach Gardens.
Investigators say the suspect, Sabates and other juveniles and young adults were drinking and using drugs in the suspect's apartment, which is where the shooting took place.
According to a press release, the group had been handling a 9mm pistol and passing it around, including removing and inserting the magazine.
At one point, the suspect began pointing the weapon at his friends in the apartment.
That's when the firearm discharged, striking Sabates in the chest. He died at the scene.
After the shooting, police say friends of the victim and suspect removed the firearm from the apartment and hit it in some nearby bushes.
When investigators interviewed witnesses they admitted this and provided the location of the gun, which was recovered by officers.
All persons involved were cooperative and provided statements to the investigators, according to police.
The information and physical evidence was consistent that this was a careless act rather than an intentional act, resulting in the manslaughter by culpable negligence charge.
The suspect was booked into the Juvenile Assessment Center and the case will be referred to the State Attorney's Office.
