NORTH PALM BEACH, Fla. - A child is recovering after a possible shark attack in Palm Beach County.
"A 9-year-old was bitten by what could have been a shark while surfing Friday afternoon at MacArthur Park in North Palm Beach," said Lt. Anthony Giarrusso, spokesman for North Palm Beach Fire Rescue.
Giarrusso said the child had wounds consistent with bites on his right ankle and foot. He said the victim told rescue crews that he "had been bitten by a shark."
Rescue crews responded around 4 p.m. to reports of a shark attack at the park. Upon arrival they found the boy on the beach with bites to his right ankle and foot.
The boy, who was not identified because of his age, was on a surf board when he was attacked. He was helped out of the water by other swimmers, Giarrusso said.
He was taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center for treatment of his wounds. There is no word on his condition.
Giarrusso said the state beach is not guarded and that he did not know if it had been closed after the incident.
There are no other details immediately available.
