North Palm Beach Martial Arts instructor teaches people self-defense techniques

Techniques simple enough for all ages

NORTH PALM BEACH, Fla. - "Elbow, groin, no. Yeah, there you go." Self defense instructor Chris Fortney says 50 percent of the people in his classes are women.

"Get a lot of calls on women who are scared, that are fearful for their lives, for the safety of their children, even victims of rape."

He teaches them a few basic moves that can help them get away from a dangerous situation. He gave me a quick lesson on how to protect myself if someone walks up behind me. "The main ones that anybody can do, any size, anywhere from my 4 year old kids that I teach all the way up to my 44 year olds or 80 year olds. They can all do stomp to the feet. elbows, hammer fists, palm heal, that is the core."

Chris says once you are able to master those moves in a class- you can move on to other self defense tactics. "And then you have a front kick or a back kick."

I asked the martial arts expert if women can use mace or even a taser. "It is a deterrent. anyone any size can use it. but also those weapons can be used against you. So that's why you need to be efficient and be prepared to use them."

But he says the best advice he can give is-- "Two best forms of self defense are self confidence and self awareness."
