(NBC) - A couple and their dog had an unexpected encounter off the coast of Jupiter.

While out for a recent day of fishing on the ocean, they were befriended by a large whale shark.

Known as the largest living non-mammalian vertebrate, whale sharks are completely harmless to humans.

So, instead of just admiring it from the boat, the woman decided to jump right in and capture video of the whale shark up close and personal.

As you can see from the video, the dog also wanted to dive in to check out the situation, but decided to stay in the boat.

The whale shark eventually glided back into the depths of the ocean as the woman says, "don't go away."

A day out on the open water became a once in a lifetime experience for these adventurers!
