JUPITER, Fla. - Jupiter police say they have booked a suspect in connection with the death of 2-year-old Elliana Lucas-Jamason.
Authorities say they are charging Kimberly Lucas, 40, with her homicide and with the attempted homicide of the victim's 10-year-old brother.
Investigators said the suspect is the former domestic partner of the children's mother.
"It appears at this time that the incident is domestic related and that the suspect did intend to take her own life after committing these crimes," said Jupiter Police Chief Frank Kitzerow at a Tuesday morning news conference.
Police revealed in a probable cause affidavit that the boy told them that Lucas give him a pill inside of a cup of coffee and cream "to make him grow faster," and also gave his sister a half a pill. He said Lucas then told him that she was going to take a bath with his sister.
He said he then felt tired and dizzy and went to his room to lie down. When he woke up he found Lucas next to him and the bathroom locked.
He used a knife to pry open the door and found his sister under the water. He tried to use CPR on her and to wake up Lucas. He then called 911, according to the police report.
All three were transported to a hospital where Eliana was pronounced dead.
"I would also like to take the time to acknowledge the lifesaving efforts of the 10-year-old boy on the scene who did everything he could to save his little sister's life," Chief Kitzerow said at that Tuesday news conference..
T.J. Carragher lives next door. "I was in shock," says Carragher. "I couldn't believe it."
He watched first responders try to save the 2-year-old girl.
"When they were putting her in the ambulance, the baby, they were still doing CPR," said Carragher. "I knew something was bad when they didn't put the sirens on though when they drove away."
Neighbors say they had only lived at the Dakota Apartments on South Bismark Lane for a few months.
Police said Lucas had a relationship with the children's mother that ended.
"It's a tragic situation," says Ofc. Brown, "Anytime you lose the life of a 2-year-old girl that's a tragic situation."
Lucas faces charges of homicide and attempted homicide. Police transported her to the Palm Beach County Jail Tuesday afternoon.
"I don't think anyone is ever really going to know what happened in this case and why it happened because none of it really makes sense. Losing a two-year-old is tragic no matter whose family it happens to. Nothing the court system can do can make sense of this horrible tragedy,” said the suspect’s attorney Marc Shiner.
