A Jupiter man was arrested today on charges he hit his 9-year-old son in the head.
Kevin Michael Dettman, 35, is being held at the Palm Beach County Jail in lieu of $3,000 bond. He is facing child abuse charges.
Jupiter Police say they were called out to a home in the 1000 block of Chickasaw Street to reports of battery on a child just after midnight Wednesday. The boy's mother told police she came home to find her son "bleeding from the right side of the head," according to the arrest report.
The woman said Dettman hit their 9-year-old on the side of the head and, falling, he then bumped his head against a piece of furniture.
The boy said Dettman was "mad" at him for not cleaning his room. He said his father hit him on the side of his head, and he hit his head on either the side of his bunk bed or a desk, the report said. The boy's brother told the same story to police.
The boy had a cut about a "half an inch long and about half as wide," the officer said. "It appeared to be relatively deep."
The officer then spoke to Dettman, who said he'd been having problems with his wife. Dettman told police he was yelling at his son about not cleaning his room, and the boy "flinched" and hit his head on the bunk bed.
