Douglas Wheeler charged with robbing Jupiter gas station, fleeing from police

JUPITER, Fla. - A man who Jupiter police say robbed at Mobil Gas Station store in Jupiter on Monday night has been booked into the Palm Beach County Jail.

Police said around 10:30 p.m. Douglas Wheeler went into the store, located at 6661 W Indiantown Rd., displaying what appeared to be a firearm and demanded money from the clerk.

Wheeler, according to officers, then fled the business in a burgundy 2005 Toyota pick-up with an undisclosed amount of money.

Jupiter police spotted the vehicle at W Indiantown Road near Interstate 95 and tried to get the driver to stop.

According to investigators, Wheeler fled the area southbound on I-95.

The truck left I-95 at PGA Boulevard and continued south on Military Trail, where the Palm Beach Gardens Police Department deployed stop sticks to deflate the vehicle's tires.

Once the truck was disabled, it veered off the road and hit a tree in the area of Military Trail and Johnson Dairy Road where Wheeler was taken into custody.

Police said that Wheeler then attempted to escape custody while being removed from the officer’s patrol vehicle at the Jupiter Police Department.

Wheeler was taken into custody and charged with robbery with a weapon, fleeing or attempting to elude, escape while in lawful custody and possession of marijuana.
