Arthur Lewis: Jewelry Exchange owner uses gun to fend off would-be robber

Arthur Lewis is the 89-year-old owner of the Jewelry Exchange in Lake Park.

He is a military veteran who served in Europe for the Army during World War II. But his first hand to hand fight happened over the weekend.

Saturday someone came into the store in the 900 block of Federal Highway in Lake Park.

Lewis says the man asked him to look at his watch and then he pulled out a gun.

Lewis had his own pistol.

The two men wrestled over the counter and both fired their weapons.

After about two minutes the would-be robber left empty handed.

Lewis can't say if it's his military training, but his instincts kicked in when he saw the man's gun. “I knew he was going to kill me. I really thought I was, uh, I thought my life was over as soon as I saw the gun.”

Lewis says a bullet got him in the arm - but it's nothing serious.

A spokesperson from the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office says detectives have identified a suspect.

On Thursday the sheriff's office said 43-year-old Lennard Jervis of Broward County was booked into the Palm Beach County Jail to face charges of robbery with a firearm, burglary with assault or battery, burglary while armed with a firearm and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.

He is currently hospitalized and will make his first appearance when he is released.
