Law enforcement agencies on the Treasure Coast are partnering with the Drug Enforcement Agency on Saturday to help residents dispose of expired or unwanted prescription drugs. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.
According to officials, unused medications sitting in home cabinets are susceptible to misuse and abuse, as well as accidental poisonings and overdoses.
Bring your unused medications to the following locations from 10 a.m to 2 p.m.:
Walgreens, 5800 SE Federal Highway, Stuart
Walgreens, 1250 NE Jensen Beach Blvd., Jensen Beach
Sewall's Point Town Hall, 1 S. Sewall's Point Road, Sewall's Point
Port St. Lucie Police Department, 121 SW Port St. Lucie Blvd., Port St. Lucie
Officials say that you should not flush medications down the drain or toilet because the chemicals can pollute the water supply. Also, remove any personal, identifiable information from empty prescription bottles or pill packages before throwing them away.
The drop-off sites are not for the disposal of liquids or bio-hazardous materials such as needles or lancets. Contact your county health department for information on disposal of these materials.
