STUART — A 17-year-old girl was flown to a trauma center Saturday afternoon after apparently sustaining a large cut to her calf from a boat propeller off the St. Lucie Inlet, a Martin County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman said.
Sheriff's officials were called just before 1:30 p.m. to the incident, sheriff's spokeswoman Christine Christofek said.
The teen was on a charter sport fishing boat just off the St. Lucie Inlet and was in the water, Christofek said. She got pulled toward the boat and caught in a propeller.
The circumstances surrounding how the teen wound up in the water were not immediately clear.
The teen got a deep cut on her right calf, and was flown from Sandsprit Park to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute in Fort Pierce. Christofek said the teen's injuries were not life threatening.
A Martin County Fire Rescue spokesman described the injuries as serious.
Christofek said Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials are investigating the incident.
