SUBURBAN STUART, Fla. - A 15-year-old South Fork High student is dead and a 18 year old suffered minor injuries in a single-vehicle accident in front of the Crystal Lake Elementary School in suburban Stuart, said Chief Doug Killane, spokesman for Martin County Fire Rescue.
Briana Lawson of Stuart was a passenger in the car. She died at the scene, according to Sgt. Mark Wysocky, spokesman for the Florida Highway Patrol.
The driver, 18-year-old Andrea Lynn Colletti, also of Stuart, tried to stop at a traffic light in front of the elementary school at 2095 SW 96
th Street when she lost control of the vehicle, which began to spin clockwise and hit a concrete utility pole, according to FHP.
Colleti was wearing her seatbelt, Briana wasn't, according to FHP.
Colletti was taken to Martin Memorial Hospital South with non-life-threatening injuries, Killane said.
Laurie Gaylord, school district superintendent, said in a news release that "the district and high school will have crisis counseling and support available to our students, their families, and our staff."
"This is a tremendous tragedy, a tremendous loss to the community and South Fork High School," Gaylord said. "Our hearts are with these students and their families as they cope with this tragedy."
The 3:16 p.m. crash is under investigation, Wysocky said.
