MARTIN COUNTY — A Stuart man was killed in a single-vehicle accident in which a car crashed and burned on Southeast Ocean Boulevard Thursday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Matthew McGrath, 47, was traveling east in a Volkswagen Jetta across the highway's bridge at 4:14 p.m. when it veered to the right and sideswiped the concrete barrier wall west of River Road, the report states. The Jetta went into a construction zone, hit a large directional arrow board and crossed a median divider before going into the westbound lanes, troopers said. By the time the vehicle stopped, it was engulfed in flames, FHP said.
McGrath was pronounced dead at the scene.
FHP is continuing to investigate the crash and the state Fire Marshal's Office is looking into the cause of the blaze in the vehicle.
