It's a project at least 10 years in the making.

On Thursday, Martin County will hold a ribbon cutting to celebrate a new U.S. Customs and Border Protection facility at Witham Field in Stuart.

The building was a long time coming to the grounds of the Martin County Airport.

A groundbreaking for the almost $2 million facility happened in August 2017 after years of delays and setbacks.

The new facility will ease international travel for boaters and pilots. It will allow them to clear customs in Martin County instead of going to St. Lucie County or Palm Beach County like they had to do in the past.

Local businesses hope this will mean more customers for them and growth for the area.

The county will hold an official ribbon cutting at 2 p.m. Thursday.

According to county officials, U.S. Customs and Border Protection will decide when the facility actually opens to the public.
