MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. - An alleged drunk driver crashed twice, stopping in between accidents to drop off a child in the median of a busy road, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.
Grant Mulder, 41, has been arrested and charged with leaving scene of a crash with property damage, child abuse, leaving scene of crash with injuries, DUI and DWLSR (driving with license suspended or revoked).
According to deputies, a witness saw Mulder hit a telephone pole at 131st Avenue and Pelican Lane in Maderia Beach around 10 p.m. Wednesday.
The airbag of Mulder's SUV deployed, hitting a child in the passenger seat. The witness approached the SUV and attempted to help the child, a 7-year-old girl, but Mulder drove away.
Deputies say Mulder drove to Duhme Road and the Tom Stuart Causeway, where he left the girl in the median. Another witness saw the girl and called 911.
Mulder then headed north on 113th Street, where he hit two cars at the stoplight at Park Boulevard, where he reportedly tried to pass between them.
He backed up, went around the crashed vehicles, and kept driving north.
The two drivers Zachary Barrett, 18, and Rebekah Trout, 21, have minor injuries.
Deputies stopped Mulder at 113th Street and Ulmerton Road.
Deputies say when Mulder was placed in cruiser, he tried to kick the windows out.
Unsuccessful, Mulder was taken to the Pinellas County Jail.
Due to Florida law, no further information will be provided about the child involved in the case.
