On Avalon Drive in Stuart where a brush fire threatened homes, residents say it's really, really dry.
Both Bill and Mary Sofield say their yard is dry even after significant rainfall.
"Quickly dissipated. We're hoping and keeping our fingers crossed," said Mary Sofield.
Even after Wednesday's rain, all counties in our area are still in severe drought.
Okeechobee County announced a burn ban Thursday.
Scott Peterich with the Florida Forest Service says the drought index had only a small drop, and is still at alarming levels.
The South Florida Water Management District is reporting even after yesterday, rainfall is still six inches below average for the dry season.
Peterich says conditions are still ripe for another repeat of last week in Martin County.
"If something happens where a person accidentally starts a fire, the fire would definitely carry. We have little bit of wind, still we're in these drying conditions where a fire could pose a threat to structures and also our highways," said Peterich.
SFWMD continues to ask homeowners and businesses to conserve water, take short showers and limit irrigation.
