STUART, Fla. - Mary Jones has lived on Robalo Court in Stuart for two years.
"A very safe neighborhood," she said, of her street. "A lot of people around here know each other. "
Jones was shocked to learn at the end of her own street, Stuart police say a 63-year-old woman was attacked after midnight Thursday morning.
"It's unbelievable," she said, of the alleged crime.
She's especially concerned, because children frequently play on the sidewalks.
"There's children from up the road that come," said Jones.
Officer Brian Bossio with the Stuart police says the victim was walking on Ocean Boulevard, when an male on a bicycle came up and asked her if she would like to make some money.
"The suspect circled around her," said Bossio. "The victim reported that the male came up from behind her and grabbed her. "
The victim told police her attacker tried to pull her into a wooded area.
"(She) fought off the suspect as best she could," said Bossio. "She scratched his face several times, and then she fled the area. "
Now, police have increased their neighborhood patrol cars.
Jones said she wants to keep the streets safe, and she hopes police find the alleged attacker.
"Maybe some crime watch signs to let people know that we are looking out for each other," she said. "It's scary that somebody would do that, and I will keep an eye out for this particular individual. "
