Martin County deputy injured attempting to stop truck headed for firefighters

MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. - A Martin County deputy was injured while trying to stop a truck headed toward fire rescue personnel in Port Mayaca, said Christine Weiss, spokeswoman for Martin County Sheriff's Office.

Around 2:30 p.m. rescue crews responded to a call of a truck that was sitting on the side of the road at 18681 SW Conners Highway. When fire rescue went to search the truck, they found a man inside.

The occupant, identified as 78-year-old Franklin Lee Hollibaugh, became belligerent and tried to take off, heading in the direction where fire-rescue personnel were standing, Weiss said.

She said Sgt. Carmine Dipaolo attempted to stop the truck by jumping into the driver's window, fell and was dragged for a short distance.

Although injured in the shoulder, Sgt. Dipaolo was able to jump into his cruiser and pursue the suspect to the Palm Beach County line, where the suspect was arrested, Weiss said.

Sgt. Dipaolo is at Martin Memorial South being treated for non-life-threatening injuries to the shoulder, Weiss said.

Hollibaugh is in custody at the Palm Beach County Jail charged with Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer, Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer and Aggravated Fleeing and Eluding, Weiss said.

She said additional charges are possible.
