Sandy Hook Elementary shooting: Martin County schools discuss student safety, special procedures

As students head back to school Monday morning, one of the biggest questions on parents' minds is school safety.

In Martin county, school administrators said safety for the students and staff is their highest priority.
School leaders said every school in the district has a crisis plan in place, which staff train for annually.
A majority of schools across the U.S. use the help of law enforcement to keep their schools safe by hiring resource officers.

Martin County school district released this statement, in part it reads, "Martin County schools partner with the Martin County Sheriff's office to provide for the safe and secure operations of our schools. The district's school resource officers, which are Martin County Sheriff's deputies, receive specialized training for dealing with critical incidents on school campuses, including prevention, rapid response, and crisis management."

School staff also practice procedures for lockdowns, evacuations and other emergency situations.
