PALM CITY, Fla. -- The Martin County Sheriff's Office is looking for a man suspected in an assault that may have stemmed from a neighborhood dispute.
The attack happened around 7 a.m. at a Palm City home on SW 42nd Avenue.
Charles Schlapkohl, 62, was attacked with a blunt object covered in a bandana, according to the sheriff's office.
Deputies say they are looking for 18-year-old Michael Jacob McGarry, also known as Jake MCGarry, of Orlando. They say he was visiting his mother's home when he broke into his neighbor's house. The two families live on the same street and have had an on-going dispute, the sheriff's office says.
After the assault, Schlapkohl got a gun and fired. The suspect was able to get outside uninjured.
More shots were then fired at the suspect's vehicle which was disabled, according to the sheriff's office.
The suspect ran off and is still at large.
Schlapkohl was transported to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center.
For a time, Citrus Grove Elementary School was placed under a cautionary lockdown. It was lifted about 9:05 a.m., according to Michele Blanco, School District spokeswoman.
Anyone who sees McGarry is urged to call 9-1-1 or the Martin County Sheriff's Office.
