MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. - Flags were lowered at half-staff Thursday at the Martin County Sheriff's Office in memory of longtime Office Major John Pietruszewski. He died Tuesday after a long battle with cancer.
Known as "Ski", Pietruszewski began his career at the Martin County Sheriff's Office as a reserve deputy in early 1983 and became a full-time sheriff deputy a few months later, according to Christine C. Weiss, spokeswoman for the sheriff's office.
Pietruszewski, who lost his bid for sheriff in 2012, is fondly remembered on the department's Facebook page.
His wife, Ruth, is Martin County Tax Collector. They have two children, Leslie and Derek.
