JENSEN BEACH, Fla.-- Hurricane season is about two weeks away. It begins June 1.
To help get ready for hurricane season, the Red Cross is pairing up with the Treasure Coast Square Mall for the 19th Annual Hurricane, Health and Safety Fair.
The event on Saturday begins at 10 a.m. and runs until 9 p.m.
Those who attend will be able to meet meteorologists from NewsChannel 5, along with other storm experts. These experts will be able to prepare you for what to expect if a storm comes our way.
Last year we learned that you don't have to be directly hit by a storm to feel its effects. Hurricane Sandy stayed miles off our shores, yet its winds created storm surge that flooded area beaches, like the one at Bathtub Reef Beach. Emergency maintenance work had to be done to save the beach and protect the nearby roadway from flooding. Crews brought in thousands of tons of sand to secure the shoreline.
Homes were damaged along the coast as well from the storm.
If you plan on going to the Hurricane Fair, it's free to attend. You'll have your first chance to pick up NewsChannel 5's Hurricane Survival Guide. If you miss the event, you'll be able to get the guide from your local Publix within the next few weeks.
