JENSEN BEACH, Fla. - A tragedy on the Treasure Coast brought hundreds of people together on Thursday night. Dayanna Gil, 18, died Monday from injuries sustained in a hit and run crash in Port St. Lucie.
The group gathered on Hutchinson Island to remember a young woman who they still cannot believe is really gone. Candlelight cut through the night in honor of Gil, a high school senior.
"It's heartbreaking seeing that one of my best friends is gone," said Daniela Villalba, who organized the memorial. She says Gil's family is trying to be strong. "Moms don't usually expect that," she said. "They expect their kids to bury them."
On the morning April 7, Gil was hit by a vehicle that kept going as she walked to her bus stop. Police say Ivette Nieves-Barsuglia, 46, was behind the wheel. A week later Gil died from her injuries.
Heartbreak has taken over at the school. "Pretty rough for the students and the staff too," said Port St. Lucie High School employee who attended the beachside vigil.
"We're not going to forget her any day soon or ever," said Villalba. "She's going to leave a mark in Port St. Lucie."
