6-vehicle pile-up closes northbound lanes of U.S. Highway 1 in Jensen Beach

Crash may have been caused by high-speed racing

JENSEN BEACH, Fla. - Two people were taken to a trauma center Monday evening after being injured in a six-car pile-up on U.S. Highway 1 in Jensen Beach, according to Christine Weiss, spokesman for Martin County Sheriff's Office.

Witnesses told deputies that two vehicles were racing at "over 100 mph" on the southbound lanes of Federal Highway or U.S. Highway 1 near Northwest Goldenroad Road, when one of the drivers lost control of the vehicle, jumped the median and into oncoming traffic, Weiss said.

One person had to be extricated from one of the vehicles and was taken to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center in critical condition, said Chief John Belding, spokesman for Martin County Fire Rescue.

The northbound lanes of U.S. Highway 1 near the accident are closed.

Florida Highway Patrol traffic investigators are en route to the scene, Weiss said.
