HOBE SOUND, Fla. - Michael D. Lookebill, a Hobe Sound man accused of DUI manslaughter in the March 2010 death of a motorcyclist, was found guilty Thursday evening of that charge and sentenced to prison.
Hobe Sound resident Charles Patrick Barry, 44, was driving his motorcycle north in the southbound lane of State Road A1A back then, approaching Southeast Osprey Road in Hobe Sound, when he was struck from behind by a truck being driven by Lookebill that also was going the wrong way in the southbound lane, police reports show.
Police investigators said Lookebill's truck was going 68 mph at impact. Barry was declared dead at the scene.
Both men had been drinking, as had Lookebill's sister, Nicole, who had been dating Barry and was a passenger in her brother's truck at the time of the crash.
Lookebill's blood alcohol content was .177 percent and Barry's was .161 percent, police reports show. The legal limit is .08 percent.
A jury found Lookebill, 40, of the 8700 block of Southeast Mansion Lane in Hobe Sound, guilty of DUI manslaughter and DUI property damage. He'll be spending 10 1/2 years in prison, after deducting time served. He also was fined $7,500 for property damage.
