HOBE SOUND, Fla. -- Keeping Martin County beautiful while preserving its past was the goal behind a clean up effort in Hobe Sound Saturday.

More than 200 volunteers gathered to clean up the Gomez Cemetery.

Folks clipped branches, raked up leaves and gathered debris to be thrown out.

Organizers say this clean up is a way to bring people together and to preserve the cemetery, which has some gravesites dated back nearly 150 years.

Coordinator James Givens said, "It speaks volumes about who we are as a church and as a community and our respect for those who have gone on before us. I feel that we owe it to our ancestors that they will have a clean place to rest for eternity."

Engineers used sonar technology to determine the location of some of the burial sites.
