Girl critically injured by water meter cover following a freak accident

Martin County sheriff’s deputies are investigating a freak accident that left a young girl with life-threatening injuries.

It happened on Southeast Fairmont street in the Golden Gate neighborhood.

Investigators say a lawnmower operated by the county ran over a water meter and ejected the metal cover which flew about 65-feet.

It landed in a car window and hit the victim in the head. She was sitting in the passenger seat.

The sheriff’s office says a relative took the victim to the hospital, where she was transported to a trauma facility.

Her father says he expects her to be in the hospital for at least ten days. He would only say that she has serious injuries.

The sheriff's office and the county are both investigating. County officials want to make sure a county employee followed procedure while operating the lawn equipment and whether the meter cover was properly secured.
