Deadly I-95 crash in Martin County

MARTIN COUNTY -- One person has been confirmed killed in a seven-vehicle accident in Martin County this morning.

The accident happened about 8 a.m. Thursday at milemarker 102, near the Kanner Highway overpass. Martin County Fire Rescue crews who were clearing a previous emergency call on the southbound lanes of I-95 came upon the crash.

The accident involved a tractor trailer and six other vehicles. The tractor trailer ended up partially on top of one vehicle. The person killed in the accident was in that vehicle, according to Doug Killane, of Martin County Fire Rescue. The tractor trailer was carrying non-hazardous cargo, which caught fire. Two patients were extricated by rescue personnel.

Two people were taken to Martin Memorial Health Systems in Port Salerno with non-life threatening injuries. Two others were taken -- one by helicopter -- to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center in Fort Pierce in serious condition. Five others refused medical treatment on the scene, according to Killane.

All southbound lanes in the area reopened about 12:30 p.m. The lanes had been closed since the accident happened, and traffic was diverted to alternative routes. Southbound traffic was diverted in Palm City onto Martin Highway to connect to the Florida Turnpike. Tolls were suspended so motorists could avoid the accident site.

The crash is under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.
