MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. -- The Martin County Sheriff's Office and the Florida Forestry Service are investigating two suspicious fires in a sugarcane field near Port Mayaca that happened early Wednesday afternoon.
Officials say the field is located about 5 miles north of State Road 76 along Highway 441.
The fires were both about 4 or 5 acres in size, according to Martin County Sheriff, William Snyder.
Each acre amounts to about $15,000 worth of damage. The landowners are looking at close to $120,000 worth of damage.
The Sheriff's Office considers the fires suspicious as officials have not yet been able to determine a natural cause for the fire.
Area farmers say it is common this time of year to see fires in sugarcane fields. Farmers will burn the sugarcane when harvesting. Officials say that was not the case with the two fires.
